We are living in a time where hundreds of people are dying everyday, leaving many grieving families and friends. The news of a daily death toll has become second nature to hear and hearing the stories of those who died spares little heartbreak. Amongst the mourning one death stood out. Amongst the hundreds one man shook the world. It was not a death, it was murder. The murder of George Floyd. In a time when we are to show unity and understanding, compassion and strength four police officers chose to show division and segregation. Amongst uncertainty and hurt the four police officers created pain and outrage. George has a family, he is missed and this is unjust. To beg to be allowed to breathe is unjust. To beg to be let go is unjust. To be murdered because you are black is unjust. Black is beautiful.
The job of a police officer is to make people feel safe, and they have failed to do this. They have created fear in amongst black people and showed that today could be your last day. Because you were born black. But black is beautiful. We witnessed a lynching without a rope. Instead there was the force of Derek Chauvin’s knee upon his neck for 8 minutes. George’s airways would have been blocked, his body going into shock and slowly numbing. For eight minutes the officer stayed, for eight minutes George pleaded. But the officer stayed, because he was black. But black is beautiful. We forget that racism is still around us, we think the world is better because we do not see it through the eyes of those less privileged.
We forget the hardships many face on a daily basis because they were born black. But black is beautiful. It is 2020, the roaring twenties have started, we face a new era. It is an age of fun and excitement with new opportunities. But it must be like this for everyone. Everyone deserves to see a bright future. And so we fight. We fight for equality amongst black and white. Black lives matter. Black is beautiful.
